Metal grinders, also known as grinder metal or metal herb grinders, are handy devices specifically designed for grinding weed, hash, or other herbs. A metal grinder allows you to easily grind large pieces of weed or herbs into small bits with just a few quick motions. Metal grinders enable you to consistently achieve the same grind consistency, making it easier to roll the perfect joint! Additionally, metal grinders are also suitable for grinding weed and herbs for use in a vaporizer.
How does a metal grinder work?
Many 3- and 4-layer grinders are made of metal, but metal grinders are also available in a 2-piece variant. The grinding teeth are typically located in the top two layers of (almost) all metal grinders. When you place weed or herbs between the teeth and rotate the layers back and forth, what you've put in the metal grinder will be easily ground. (Almost) all metal grinders feature a magnet that keeps the top two layers of the grinder securely in place until you want to separate them. This ensures that the weed or herbs won't accidentally fall out of the grinder.
The different types of metal grinders

- 2-Piece Metal Grinder: As the name suggests, a 2-piece metal grinder consists of two parts. This simple metal grinder is easy to use: you place the material to be ground between the two layers and rotate them back and forth. The teeth in the grinder's layers will grind the weed or herbs.
- 3-Layer Metal Grinder: A 3-layer metal grinder is one of the most common metal grinders. It functions very similarly to a 2-piece metal grinder, but the 3-layer variant has a convenient storage compartment for the ground material beneath the grinding section. Some metal 3-layer grinders also include a trichome filter, where the weed remains in the grinding section while the filter separates the kief, which is then collected in the bottom layer of the metal grinder.
- 4-Layer Metal Grinder: 4-layer metal grinders are generally considered the most advanced grinders. Like other grinders, they feature teeth in the top two layers. The layer below serves as a storage compartment for the ground weed, and its bottom part contains a fine mesh screen. This screen separates the kief from the weed, collecting it in the bottom layer of the metal grinder.
